Each year, nearly 200 Emma Bowen students gather in New York City at the Emma Bowen Foundation Annual Summer Conference to network, learn, and take their first steps toward a career in the media and technology industries. This year’s conference will take place at New York University’s Kimmel Center and feature talks by charismatic leaders in the industry and conversations with EBF Alumni, as well as the Foundation's flagship events, including the Foundation’s Annual Power Networking event and the Foundation’s Annual Career Fair with some of the industry’s leading employers.

Jaeah Lee

Magazine Journalist
Jaeah is an independent journalist in San Francisco and an inaugural recipient of the American Mosaic Journalism Prize. She was a 2017 senior fellow at Brandeis University's Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism—a program supported by the Fund for Investigative Journalism and the Ford Foundation—and a 2017 restorative narrative fellow with Images and Voices of Hope. She serves on the board of the Asian American Journalists Association's San Francisco-Bay Area chapter. Jaeah was previously a staff reporter at Mother Jones, where she covered policing after Ferguson, and wrote about criminal justice, income inequality, and race, among other subjects.

NBC News
Hoda Kotb is the co-anchor of NBC News’ “TODAY” and co-host of the fourth hour of NBC News’ TODAY alongside Kathie Lee Gifford. Kotb joined “TODAY” as a co-host of the fourth hour in 2008, and the Gifford-Kotb hour has been hailed as “appointment television” by Entertainment Weekly, “uproarious and irresistible” by People, and “TODAY’s happy hour” by USA Today.

Since joining NBC in 1998, Kotb has served as a correspondent for “Dateline NBC.” She has covered a wide variety of domestic and international stories across all NBC News platforms as well as numerous human-interest stories and features. She covered the aftermath and one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a story personal to Kotb who lived in New Orleans for six years. Additionally, she has reported on the war in Iraq, the conflict in the West Bank and Gaza, and the War on Terror in Afghanistan. Kotb was a part of the network’s extensive coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio and 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

A New York Times bestselling author, Kotb has written five books: I’ve Loved You Since Forever, Hoda: How I Survived War Zones, Bad Hair, Cancer and Kathie Lee; Ten Years Later: Six People Who Faced Adversity and Transformed Their Lives and Where They Belong. Kotb is an 9-year breast cancer survivor and is involved in several initiatives to raise awareness about the disease.

Kotb was recognized with a 2016 Gracie Award for Outstanding Host in Entertainment/Information for her radio show, “The Hoda Show on SiriusXM.” In 2015, she was honored with a Gracie Award for Outstanding Host in News/Non-fiction and a Webby Award for her ‘Truly Brave’ music video, shining a light on pediatric cancer. Kotb received additional Gracie Awards in 2008 and 2003, the Alfred I. duPont –Columbia University award in 2008, a Peabody Award in 2006 for her “Dateline NBC” report, “The Education of Ms. Groves” and a 2002 Edward R. Murrow Award. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Kotb was awarded Daytime Emmys as part of TODAY’s recognition as the best morning news program.

Prior to joining NBC News, Kotb worked at WWL-TV, the CBS affiliate in New Orleans from 1992 to 1998 as an anchor and reporter for the 10 p.m. news broadcast. From 1989 to 1991, she was a weekend anchor and reporter for WINK-TV in Fort Myers, Florida.

Kotb graduated from Virginia Tech University with a Bachelor of Arts in broadcast journalism. She welcomed daughter Haley Joy in February 2017 and resides in New York City.

In 2011, Madison retired from NBCUniversal, where she had been Executive Vice President of Diversity as well as a Vice President of the General Electric Company (GE), then the parent company of NBCU. During her 22 years with NBCU, she held a number of successful leadership
roles, including President and General Manager of NBC4 Los Angeles, Los Angeles Regional General Manager for NBCU’s Telemundo TV stations and Vice President and News Director of NBC4 New York.
Madison, named one of the “75 Most Powerful African Americans in Corporate America” by Black Enterprise Magazine in 2005 and included in the Hollywood Reporter’s “Power 100," she's been honored by Asian organizations as well, having been recognized in 2014 as one of the Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business and in 2015, she was honored by the East West Players and AARP with their Visionary Award and by the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles with the Historymaker Award. She's also the author and filmmaker of the book and documentary FINDING SAMUEL LOWE, which tell of her successful search to locate her Chinese grandfather's descendants in China.
In 2013, Mayor Eric Garcetti appointed Madison to the Los Angeles Police Commission where she served as vice president until 2015.

Fran Scarlett is INN’s director of programs and services and serves as INN's business coach. In her role at INN she is focused on building the business capacity of INN's network of 160 news organizations with a particular emphasis on audience development, business strategy and revenue generation.
Scarlett has extensive experience as a strategy consultant, an entrepreneur and news industry executive.

She specializes in helping organizations understand and leverage their value propositions to build business models that maximize their potential for revenue growth and long term sustainability. Her experience working with hundreds of companies across numerous industries has honed her expertise in deciphering organizational challenges and recommending achievable and sustainable solutions.

Prior to joining INN Scarlett served as the regional director of the Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She was responsible for starting businesses, growing capital investment and creating jobs in Southeastern North Carolina. Prior to that, she ran her own management consulting firm, Scarlett Ink Media, providing strategic and tactical consulting to news media organizations with an emphasis on developing new revenue models; product development and cross-platform collaborations.

Before consulting, Scarlett spent ten years at The Plain Dealer in the advertising division. In her role, she worked closely with the news division in content development to grow incremental revenue. During her tenure she created and served as the general manager of the custom publishing group with responsibility for editorial, sales and operations. Scarlett spent five years with the Knight-Ridder Corporation with The Wichita Eagle and The Miami Herald. During her time at The Wichita Eagle, Scarlett was a general assignment reporter in Metro and Features before serving as Publisher of NOISE- a free-distribution alternative weekly targeted to teens.

Scarlett received her MBA from Harvard University and a B.S. in Mass Communications from Boston University.

Luisa Garcia is a CBS News Video Journalist and Associate Producer based in New York. She travels across the country covering breaking news and the latest developing stories. Luisa works with bureau chiefs, producers and on-air talent around the clock, often coordinating, shooting and producing interviews and live shots. Her pieces air on CBS News’ national broadcasts and CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 digital streaming news service. Her investigations have revealed disturbing cases of sexual abuse within the federal agency that patrols the U.S. border and allegations of environmental racism in North Carolina surrounding the world's largest pork producer. She spent nearly two months in Puerto Rico reporting on the aftermath and devastation of Hurricane Maria. Luisa is also passionate about human-interest stories that highlight the good deeds of everyday heroes.

Luisa was selected for the African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative through the International Women in Media Foundation. She recently traveled to Rwanda to report on food security and women's empowerment.

He was promoted to his current position from Memphis, TN where he was Vice President, General Manager at Fox 13 WHBQ-TV for two years. Mr. Bebel has been in broadcasting for over thirty years serving in a variety of sales and sales management positions for companies including Fox, CBS and The Dispatch Group.

In his current position, some of his career accomplishments include: expanding local newscasts from 22.0 to 57.5 hours per week; launching brand new shows: THE NEWS EDGE, ISIAH FACTOR: UNCENSORED and political roundtable WHAT’S YOUR POINT; conceived popular news franchise segments: FOX FACEOFF, BUILDING BETTER MINDS, PEOPLE FOR $ALE: HOUSTON’S DIRTY LITTLE SECRET, DARK SECRETS: UNCOVERING CHILD PREDATORS and the Emmy Award winning, MYFOXHOUSTONLIVE!com. Michael Jeremy entered the media industry as an Emma L Bowen Scholar with CBS TV Station Sales the Summer prior his senior year of high school in the South Bronx. He now resides in Los Angeles, continues to thrive in the advertising realm with CBS TV Stations, and is an independent producer of media shining light on the LGBTQ and Hispanic communities.

Courtnee Futch, 23, currently manages Partnerships and Marketing at Cater2.Me in NYC, a national corporate catering startup. She is an Atlanta native who grew up baking her mother's coveted recipes. When she left for Syracuse University as a 16-year old freshman, she turned to baking again, first as a hobby. Later that year, she decided to start selling her baked goods. Courtnee started ThunderCakes in 2012 and grew it into an e-commerce bakery for the Syracuse community. After finishing her MS in Entrepreneurship at Syracuse in 2016, she moved to the Big Apple to begin her career in food. She is now in culinary school and has her sights set on a career as a Chief Culinary/Innovation Officer.

Denise Horn is a communications and media professional with corporate, political, and government experience.
Currently, Denise is the director of corporate communications for Turner. Based in New York, Denise is responsible for managing corporate partnerships and overseeing communications strategy for executive leadership.
She began her career at NBC Universal’s highly competitive page program in New York City, where she worked on shows such as Mad Money with Jim Cramer and Dr. Oz. In 2012, Denise served as the assistant traveling press secretary for Obama for America 2012, giving her the opportunity to travel across the country on behalf of the campaign. She also worked on Facebook’s policy communications team before joining the U.S. Department of Education, where she served as the Obama Administration’s primary higher education spokesperson for higher education. In 2016, she was tapped as the as the Director of African American Media on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 Presidential campaign—producing ads, developing messaging and leading communications outreach to the Black community.
She has been featured as a spokesperson in national outlets such as the Washington Post, Bloomberg, Buzzfeed, Huffington Post and ESSENCE. Denise Horn graduated cum laude from Howard University, where she studied journalism and earned her Master of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. She is a native of New Jersey.

Jeanine Heck

Jeanine Gubler Heck is Vice President of Artificial Intelligence Product in the Technology and Product organization of Comcast. In this role, Jeanine is leading the company’s efforts to bring artificial intelligence into Xfinity products. She was the founding product manager for the X1 voice remote which allows customers to interact with their TV through intuitive voice commands. Additionally, Jeanine’s team develops other AI products including computer vision algorithms for Xfinity Home cameras, media analytics for TV, and customer experience interactions via an Xfinity virtual assistant.
Since joining Comcast in 2007, Jeanine has used her entrepreneurial approach to product management to build algorithms that enhance user experiences. Prior to her current role, Jeanine led the launch of a cloud-based TV search engine as well as the company’s first TV recommendations engine.
In 2012, Jeanine was the founding leader of Comcast’s Women’s Network for its inaugural three years. Jeanine spends her time outside of work encouraging young people to pursue careers in technology. She sits on the board at her alma mater, St. Hubert High School for Girls, and she mentors computer science students at Lower Merion High School.
Jeanine received her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Columbia University. She lives in the Philadelphia area with her husband and 4 children.

Jackie Donaldson

Jackie Donaldson is currently VP of Client Solutions for BAMTECH Media, a Disney Company. She runs a team of folks that manage BAMTECH’s third party business including Sony, MLB, WWE and HBO.
Prior to BAMTECH, Jackie was with Level 3 (now Century Link) for 10 years in various roles, including Client Executive, and Director of Sales for Vyvx Solutions– a business that has been integral in bringing events like the Super Bowl, Olympics and the Democratic National Convention to viewers all across the globe. She also oversaw sales for the Content Markets Group, specifically focused on sports and media.

Prior to joining Level 3, Donaldson spent two years at British Telecom within the Global Services Group, where she served as a Global Account Director and also managed the Mediastream Platform.
Prior to BT, Donaldson was with PanAmSat Corporation (now Intelsat) in both Videoconferencing and Satellite Sales. She has also held positions at FLAG Telecom, Bank of Montreal (Canada), Montreal Neurological Institute (Canada) and Christian Dior International.

Ms Donaldson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University, Montreal, Canada and a Master of International Management degree from The American Graduate School (Thunderbird) in Arizona.

Prior to joining Kivvit, Akeem served as senior associate director of digital strategy at APCO Worldwide, where he transformed digital insights into actionable campaigns for Hyundai Hope on Wheels, Politifact, Tilr and Kellogg Company. In addition to leading digital programs, Akeem led media relations and strategic communications for healthcare, hospitality and consumer product good companies. Akeem is a former award-winning multi-media journalist, serving as a producer at WJBK FOX 2 Detroit and a reporter for the Tallahassee Democrat, a Gannett newspaper.

Prior to joining The Switch in January of 2014, Wolf spent 33 years at The ABC Television Network where he served as Vice President of Telecommunications & Affiliate Support. While at ABC, he was responsible for all technical, operational and management systems associated with the distribution of the ABC Network to its 240 affiliated broadcast stations. He was also in charge of the contribution process associated with the gathering of video/audio content for the programmers of The ABC Television Network including ABC Daytime, ABC Entertainment and ESPN on ABC.

Prior to joining ABC, he spent a year at RCA American Communications and three years at Hughes Television Network from 1976-1979.

A graduate of the State University of New York at Oswego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications Studies, Wolf also holds an Associate of Arts degree from Nassau Community College, Garden City, NY. Mr. Wolf is currently on the Board of Directors of The Emma Bowen Foundation, a multi-year program that prepares a diverse group of talented young professionals to enter the media workforce with specific job related skills, knowledge of the corporate environment and a strong foundation for career advancement, has been a two-time Chairman of the Society of Satellite Professionals International, now the Space & Satellite Professionals International (SSPI), is an Advisory Board member of the NAB Show NY and has been a member of the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA), serving on its Technical, News & Operations Committee.

Stephen Kim

Stephen Kim is a longtime veteran of the media and marketing industry having served most recently as Vice President of Global Accounts at AOL where he led the company’s efforts to partner with the world’s largest marketers. Previously, Stephen was at Microsoft Corporation for twelve years, most recently as Vice President of Global Marketing for Microsoft Advertising where he drove worldwide trade and consumer marketing.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Stephen was Chief Research Officer at Media Metrix, a global provider of online audience panel measurement. Before joining the online world, Stephen was an attorney with the law firm of Morrison & Foerster specializing in the regulation of new technologies and the use of statistics in complex litigation. Before that, he was a reporter for the Fort-Worth Star Telegram and the Shoreline Times.Stephen currently serves on several advertising industry boards, including AdColor, the Marcus Graham Project, the Media Ratings Council, the Center for the Digital Future at the University of Southern California Annenberg School and the Future of Advertising Project at the Wharton School of Business. Stephen also served as a Co-Chair of the US Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Research Council from 2004-2008 and was Chair of the Board of the Advertising Research Foundation from 2007-2009.

Stephen holds an M.A. in Communications Research from the Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania, an A.B. in Political Science from Brown University, and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Ron Rosenthal is currently Director of Sales, Strategic Accounts for Limelight Networks, Prior to joining Limelight Networks, Ron held the position of Senior Director, Strategic Accounts at Snell Advanced Media. In 2013, he co-founded Garden City Studios, LLC, a state of the art IP broadcast production facility located in Garden City, NY. His four-decade career in the broadcast media industry includes various production, operations and transmission management positions at Cablevision Systems Corp., Rainbow Network Communications, USA Networks, Group W Satellite Communications, ABC Television Network and NBC Television Network.

Throughout his career, Ron has built, managed and coached numerous successful globally based sales teams at multiple media technology companies including; Snell Advanced Media, Bitcentral, Imagine Communications, Level 3 Communications, Intelsat, PanAmSat and Williams Communications.

Over the past 20 years, Ron has been an active member of many media industry organizations including; SMPTE, SSPI, NABA, ISOG, VSF and SVG.

Ron resides in the New York metropolitan area with his wife Ana. They have 3 children; Nicole, Alexis and Andrew.

John Gonzalez

Currently the Vice President of Technology and Operations for Telemundo 47 / WNJU, John Gonzalez is an industry veteran with more than 30 years of professional experience as a photojournalist, digital editor and technology supervisor.
Gonzalez led the design of Telemundo 47’s state-of-the-art broadcast transmitter and oversaw its launch from One World Trade Center in June 2017. This move resulted in Telemundo 47 being the first Tri-State television station to officially resume over-the-air transmissions from One World Trade Center. Telemundo 47 now has the largest coverage area of any television station in the New York market.

Prior to being named Vice President of Technology and Operations, Gonzalez served as Director of Technology and Operations for Telemundo 47 for nearly four years. He has also worked as Director of Digital Media and Information for WNBC at NBCUniversal. In addition, he has also held several other leadership positions within NBCUniversal.

Delia McGee

Delia is a graduate of the University of Virginia and an Emma Bowen alum. As an Emma Bowen scholar, HBO was her corporate sponsor where she was able to intern in Advanced Technology Operations, Media & Productions Operations, and Digital Products from 2010 to 2013. After graduating with a degree in Engineering Science with concentrations in Systems Engineering and Applied Math from UVA, Delia accepted a position as a Process Management Coordinator at HBO. She is currently at HBO as an Associate Business Analyst in the Media Information & Technology Services group, where she manages projects across the hardware and software infrastructure departments. In his role as Senior Vice President, Product and Technology, Joseph Ambeault is responsible for all product, engineering, design and program management efforts across Discovery’s U.S. Digital organization.

Prior to joining Discovery in March 2017, Ambeault spent 11 years in product roles leading the
start-up of multiple media and entertainment businesses for Verizon. He was part of the leadership team that launched the Verizon Digital Media Services business, which has grown to become one of the largest content delivery networks. He served as Chief Product Officer and then Chief Executive Officer of Verizon’s joint venture with Redbox for a subscription OTT video service. Prior to his roles at Verizon, Ambeault held technology, product and marketing roles for SeaChange International.

Ambeault is a member of the National Television Academy of Arts and Sciences Technology committee. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University and is based out of Discovery’s New York office.

She develops strategies to reach multicultural audiences across all marketing platforms for Charter, and directs the company’s multicultural acquisition and customer relationship management for Spectrum products.

Ms. Martínez joined Time Warner Cable from Unilever where she was Multicultural Brand Manager. Before Unilever, she served as Senior Marketing Manager at Verizon Communications. Earlier in her career she held several positions at multicultural advertising agencies where she managed campaigns for several brands, including Procter & Gamble’s Downy, Pantene and Head & Shoulders, MetroPlus Health Plans and Scholastic.
Ms. Martínez is a member of Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) and the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity In Communications (NAMIC).

A veteran technology leader with more than two decades of experience serving Fortune 500 companies in the United States and around the world, Evansky has led numerous, high-profile projects at NBC 4 New York including the move to a new state-of-the-art studio at Rockefeller center and the launch of StormTracker 4, a first-of-its-kind S-Band doppler radar which can measure on-the-ground weather conditions in real time.

Evansky joined the NBCUniversal family in 2009 as a consultant working with different business units. In 2012 he became staff and joined NBC’s Advanced Technology & Standards team.

Michelle Duke has over 25 years of experience in the media industry working as a journalist, a trade association and non-profit executive.

She is currently the Vice President of the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF). In this role she is responsible for setting strategic and tactical direction as well as developing and managing NABEF’s leadership initiatives.

Michelle developed the concept for the NABEF continuum of programs and created several successful initiatives including: The Leadership Development Program, the Technology Apprenticeship Program and the Connections Mentoring Program. In 2007 she began managing the NABEF Broadcast Leadership Training program, designed to train executive broadcasters to purchase stations or more into more senior level executive positions.

Previously she held the position of Vice President of Diversity and Development at the NABEF where she was responsible for the setting the strategic direction of NABEF’s diversity agenda.

Before joining NABEF in January 2005, Michelle was the Director of Leadership Programs for the Newspaper Association of America. She started her media career as a reporter for the now defunct, afternoon daily The Nashville Banner, which was based in Nashville, TN.

Michelle has been listed on Radio Ink Magazine’s Most Influential Women in Radio for the past seven years. She received the Star Award from the National Capital Area chapter of the Alliance for Women in Media. She has served on the national board of the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, as the board chair of the Washington Literacy Center and as a board director and volunteer for numerous organizations.

In her role, Versichelli co-manages the day-to-day activities for the New York sales team and oversees the Southeast region advertising sales team, which includes developing and presenting sales opportunities to buyers, planners, and clients. Versichelli is also charged with managing the direct response and paid programming teams, including day-to-day focus on client presentations, directing sales efforts, and anticipating marketplace projections.
Versichelli joined Crown Media Family Networks from MTV Networks where she worked for nearly two decades. She was most recently the vice president of advertising sales, managing the advertising sales teams for TV Land, CMT, Comedy Central, and Spike. Prior to that, she was account manager and sales planner for MTV Networks, Nickelodeon, Nick @ Nite and TV Land channels. She also worked as a senior media buyer for Backer Spielvogel Bates, Inc.
Versichelli received her bachelor’s of science degree in marketing/management from the State University of New York at Albany. Dartunorro grew up on Chicago’s South Side in Bronzeville, which is coincidentally Chicago’s Harlem. When he arrived in New York City for the first time in 2013 to attended Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, he chose Bedford-Stuyvesant as his beat because of his favorite film, “Do The Right Thing.”

Although he has grown to love New York City, as a native Chicagoan, he adamantly believes that Chicago’s pizza is infinitely better.

2018 EBF Student of the Year
A select group of graduating senior EBF fellows are identified as Student of the Year candidates based on their academic record and internship performance.
